What is Deep Cleaning (Deep Scaling & Root Planning)?
When plaque and tartar accumulate on your teeth, they provide a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria can inflame your gums, making them more prone to bleeding. If you see bleeding while brushing or eating, it could be an early warning of gum disease, called gingivitis.
If gingivitis is identified, your dental hygienist will carry out scaling and polishing to remove plaque and tartar buildup. She may also recommend an antiseptic mouth rinse containing chlorhexidine and offer tips on effective brushing and flossing. Keep in mind that some degree of gum disease is common among adults.
If gingivitis is left untreated, the inflammation can extend deeper into the tissues supporting your teeth, creating a “periodontal pocket.” This pocket becomes a haven for bacteria, which can lead to infection and eventually cause the bone surrounding your teeth to deteriorate.
Periodontal (gum) disease slowly damages the bone that holds your teeth in place, which can eventually cause teeth to become loose. Unfortunately, noticeable symptoms often don’t show up until the disease is more advanced. While lost bone cannot be restored, identifying and treating the condition early can prevent further damage, manage the infection, and protect your overall oral health—that’s the key benefit.
To stop the progression of periodontal (gum) disease, Dr. Stewart Judy may suggest specialized periodontal care or a deep cleaning. This treatment eliminates bacteria from the gum pockets and helps the gums heal, supporting overall gum health.
